Just by watching an hour of TV, or flipping through your favorite magazine you know of the thousands of weight loss “plans” or diets that are around today. For women with PCOS, it may be a bit misleading or confusing…. we know we’re supposed to watch our carbs, only eat “good carbs” as this is what best controls our insulin resistance, therefore controlling our PCOS. But the question is, which diet or plan do we choose?
Below are the most common eating plans used by women with PCOS. I say eating plan because I don’t consider them “diets”. We are not starving ourselves, eating the wrong things for a short amount of time to lose weight, etc. This is a life long choice for us. If we want to control our PCOS and its symptoms, we need to chose an eating plan and stick to it, indefinitely.
The glycemic index (GI) is a system used to classify foods with carbohydrates on how fast they raise our blood-sugar levels. There are 3 general categories:
High GI Foods (GI value 70%2B)
These cause a fast rise in blood-glucose levels
Medium GI Foods (GI value 55-69) These cause a medium rise in blood-glucose
Low GI Carb Foods (GI value 54 or less) These cause a slow rise in blood-sugar
This is considered the best option for women with PCOS. A low-GI plan is a balanced diet based with medium and low GI carbs, plus healthy protein and fats (including plenty of healthy whole grains as well as fruits and vegetables. A great plan to follow is Weight Watchers, as they base their meals on the Glycemic index principal.
South Beach Diet
The South Beach Diet consists of lean proteins, healthy fats and oils, nuts, seeds, and fresh vegetables and fruits and is a favorable diet for PCOS. The theory is if you cut back on carbs, and eat a higher percentage of protein that your body will have less insulin responses to carbs.
It consists of three phases, where you slowly add more carbs back into your meals. The point of the first phase is to get rid of cravings that PCOS’ers have for carbs by eliminating them completely. Then, as good carbs are added into back, you are less likely to lose control and binge. The types of carbs allowed on the SBD are those that score low on the glycemic index.
The Zone Diet
The Zone Diet is about balancing your hormones to control hunger on fewer calories but still getting the nutrients your body needs for long-term health. The Zone is a moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-protein, moderate fat diet that has approximately one gram of fat for every two grams of protein and three grams of carbs. These dietary ratios are based off of the dietary recommendations from the Joslin Diabetes Research Center at Harvard Medical School for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The Zone’s meals include:
- Low-fat protein
- Low glycemic-load carbs (mostly fruits and vegetables)
- Heart-healthy monounsaturated fats
Diets to Avoid
Another common “low carb” plan is The Atkins diet. This is NOT recommended for women with PCOS, in fact it should be avoided completely. The Atkins diet has been associated with a large number of heart related conditions and even death. It focuses on completely removing carbs, and eating high fat, unhealthy proteins (such as hamburger, bacon, etc) which is why we need to stay FAR away.
Women with PCOS already have a higher risk of heart disease, high cholesterol/blood pressure and stroke, so adding a diet high in fatty proteins would only increase our risk. Plus, starving your body of the carbs it needs to survive only increases the risk even more.
The first decision on whether or not the abortion should take place is based completely on a personal level; it is after this stage that things can become complicated, the stage when other parties may become involved, such as ‘pro-lifer’s’ or pressure groups against abortions, and even the government due to the laws restricting abortion in certain cases. As well as restrictions due to laws another major factor influencing people on their opinion of abortion is religion, which will be looked at more closely later on in the essay.
Looking at public opinion there seems to be two main separate groups that most other people will look to form their own opinion on the abortion debate. These two main sectors are shown below, with a brief description of each.
‘Pro-lifers’: this is the sector that believes that abortion is murder. That at the moment of conception a human life with it’s own unique DNA is created, and is therefore entitled to the basic set of human rights that the rest of the worlds population experiences. According to Gabriella “Practicing safe sex is very important.”
‘Pro-choicers’: This sector of the debate believes that human life begins later on in the gestation period, and that at the point of conception the embryo has no feeling and cannot be likened to any other live human being, so it does not have the same basic human rights. They believe that the choice whether or not to have the abortion is down to the mother of the unborn child.
Abortion in America
According to American statistics the vast majority of abortions (in excess of 90%) are sought for personal reasons. Reasons include age, in fact most abortions occur are because the women feel that they are too young to have a child. Other reasons include economic status, marital status, not ready for the responsibility of having a child. The second smallest percentage from the U.S statistics for women having an abortion is because of medical complications, either relating to the baby, or the mother. The smallest percentage out of this study is related to ‘abusive sexual acts.’ Although it is only 1% out of 100 there are approximately ten to fifteen thousand abortions each year caused by sexual abuse.
Let us now talk briefly about laws that prohibit abortion. In the UK abortion was originally made illegal in the early 1800’s, although methods of abortion have been known to date back to ancient civilisations. In 1861 the ‘Offences Against the Person Act’ made it illegal to deliberately cause a miscarriage. It became a criminal offence to supply poison or to introduce any other method of causing an abortion, and if a person was found guilty of such an act they would be sentenced to life imprisonment, it is likely that the sentence is so because committing abortion is seen in some eyes as murder.
The Abortion Law Reform Association (ALRA) was formed in 1936, and started as a small group of people who were appalled at how many women were suffering and dying as a direct result from trying to procure illegal abortions. From the official ALRA site on the Internet gives much information on all aspects of law on abortion in this country. The quote below comes from the section of the history of abortion law in the U.K and shows perhaps one example where people can see that abortion can be morally justifiable.
At this point in history where women were expected to conform to all laws and not speak out, a number of organisations led by women supported the Dr in his act and called for a reform of the laws on abortion. This was the first time since the laws had been written in the 1800’s that the physical and mental health of the woman in question had been accepted as grounds for the abortion to go ahead.
Since the law there has only been one major change to it, this being the upper time limit for an abortion to go ahead. It was 28 weeks because it was thought that a baby could be born alive at this time. It has since changed to 24 weeks because of the same reason. What are the abortion options available?
The Religious Aspects
Moving on now to religious aspects and other areas of society we will begin to see that it is this area of the subject that will show the most opposition to the subject. Many religions are completely against any notion of abortion. Opposition to abortion is more commonly found in the below religions and other areas of society: fundamentalists, Evangelical Protestants, Orthodox Jews, older people, and less educated people.
Although these are only very basic generalisations on the subject we can begin to build up a picture of the kind of sides that develop the debate in question. The religious side to the debate is based largely on the fact that those religions opposed to abortion are so opposed because of the restraints put upon them because of their relationship with the religion. In layman’s terms, if the religion says that abortion is wrong then the feelings of the person adhering to the religion will concur with those of the religion.
There are exceptions of course, and this is where we can see an issue concerning inconsistency, in that people do not always follow their religion as strictly as possible. Views are changing in the world; roughly 50 years ago it was almost illegal to be a homosexual in this country, yet now, since views have changed, people are much more tolerant on this subject. It may not be a completely perfect comparison to the debate on abortion but it’s a start. Younger generations are now becoming more educated on issues concerning sex and relationships, and therefore are becoming more tolerant in their views on subjects such as homosexuality and abortion, to name just two.
One of the hardest things about coming up with a coherent and reliable close to the debate on abortion is that it is generally down to personal preference and opinion. Whether one person believes it is right or wrong is completely down to him or her, and their own personal beliefs. However, this is not the answer to the question we are looking for. What we need to know is whether or not abortion is a morally just practise. For this we need to look closely at the human rights issue that is buried in the abortion debate.
By terminating a pregnancy is a murder being committed? Does the quality of life of the unborn child bear any relation to whether the abortion is justified? Would it be better to save the mothers life by having and abortion if having the baby would kill the mother during birth? There are so many aspects and different circumstances to consider when looking at the justifiability of the subject. It is quite similar in that respect to the debate on euthanasia, and also about animal testing. Is it justifiable to perform tests on animals for the benefit of human kind despite the fact that we know the animals will be harmed during the process?
Conclusion & Confusion
Here is where the main question of inconsistency lies. Do people who believe abortion to be morally wrong believe that euthanasia and animal testing are intrinsically wrong for the same reasons? This however is beginning to touch on a different debate altogether, but it would be interesting to find a pro-lifer scientist wishing to further the human races knowledge through experimentation and see what his point of view on the subject would be. You would imagine that one who was so against abortion would be against euthanasia also because of the loss of human life.
The thing is that it’s not just a question of life, but also a question of quality of life.
Who makes the decision? Should it be down to the mother, the doctor, or the priest? If a woman becomes pregnant through rape is there justification for an abortion to be performed?
The answers to some of the questions above will be different for each individual. There is no straightforward answer on the subject, just personal conjecture. It is the circumstances of each abortion that will determine if the act is morally justifiable, and not the practice itself.
Scientists have time and again disproved the connection between diet and ADHD. But in 1973, a pediatric allergist named Benjamin Feingold, MD came forward with his study that showed a distinct connection between diet and ADHD.
Back in the 1920’s he started out as a pediatrician and saw the historic changes in the diets of children. In the 1960s, he saw the proliferation of food dyes and flavorings that became popular with foods on the supermarket shelves and became ultimately popular with children of the era.
Dr. Feingold’s favorite saying: “Any compound, natural or synthetic, can induce an adverse reaction if the individual has the appropriate genetic profile, i.e., disposition.”
He had world-wide scientific contacts so he knew what new findings there were in other countries, especially those who were researching about the cross-reactivity of salicylates and additives. Today, although it is reported that only a small percentage of children diagnosed with ADHD will have a positive reaction to an additive-free diet, it is recommended that an ADHD child should be given at least two servings of fish in their diet. It is shown that fish, rich in Omega-3 has a substantial effect on one’s’ brain functions therefore affecting an ADHD patient’s performance.
A popular diet for ADHD is the Feingold diet. Functioning in two stages, the Feingold diet clearly stipulates in Stage One the elimination of additives in food and salicylate compounds in certain foods and even non-foods like fragrances. Stage two is identifying the salicylates that can be tolerated. Improvements in focus and behavior have been reported and studies done in the early nineties have shown that around 75% of children who were put on the diet manifested considerable improvement.
The Feingold diet is not a hard and fast diet. It is actually a program which recommends a sort of a trial and error method to identify the foods that your child with ADHD reacts to. Inasmuch as the Feingold ADHD program is centered mostly on fish, it is also an ideal exchange diet for weight loss.
Today, breast cancer accounts for 26% of all cancers in women and 1% of all cancers in men. It kills more women every year than any other type of cancer, except lung cancer. The seriousness of the disease is compounded by the fact that much about it is not known yet; its causes, etiology and treatment methods are still not understood fully. The only method to combat breast cancer is to be forewarned and take proper preventive measures.
What is Breast Cancer?
It is an abnormal growth of a tumor anywhere in the breast, which will be apparent in the early stages as a lump. This growth remains benign for a certain period of time (which varies from one woman to another). During this benign period, the tumor can be surgically removed and the cancer can be eradicated. However once the cancer begins spreading, there is no way to treat the cancer.
It is essential to know what the telltale signs of breast cancer are. In females, the following symptoms may indicate the onset of this cancer:-
- A sudden lump formed anywhere in the breast,
- Changes in coloration of the skin above the breast,
- Crimpling of the skin below the breast,
- Deformation in the nipple shape,
- Discharge from the nipple, including a bloody discharge in the later stages.
- Any unexplained change in the breast shape, color and size, especially in the region of the nipple, requires immediate attention.
The High-Risk Group
Though it may seem alarming to some women, it is absolutely vital to know who the high-risk groups for breast cancer are. This may help you to be extra wary about the disease and take proper preventive measures. Breast cancer is more found in:-
- Women who are overweight and lead a lifestyle with little exercise;
- Women who have had some sort of surgery on the breast, including breast implant surgery;
- Women who have had a family history of breast cancers;
- Women who smoke and consume alcohol;
- Women with a scarred breast tissue, etc.
Breast Cancer Prevention
Though the actual causes of breast cancer are still an enigma, there are certain strongly indicated causative factors that one must avoid. These are given below:-
(i) Maintain your body weight – It has been found to be more prominent in overweight women than in slimmer ones. Hence, it is necessary to keep a steady acceptable weight throughout the life. A body mass index of below 25 is quite ideal. See if you can lose weight quickly with this 3 week diet plan. Alternatively you can consider taking 3 diet pills
(ii) Consider the genetic factors – It is suspected to be produced due to the abnormalities in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. It is necessary to check up on whatever information you can get about these genes. Additionally, if your family has a history of breast cancer, then you must keep up a regular checkup routine with your doctor.
(iii) Eating the right foods – Several foods have a tenacity to ward off cancers. A list of the foods that are advantageous in breast cancer prevention is given below:-
- Cruciferous foods such cabbage, cauliflower, sprouts, broccoli, legumes, etc;
- Citrus vitamin C containing foods such as oranges and tomatoes;
- Soy products such as tempeh, tofu, edamame, etc;
- Low carbohydrate foods such as beans and legumes, etc.
(iv) Use the right fats – Fats are known to influence the chances of breast cancer strongly. It is absolutely necessary to stop the consumption of omega-6 fats such as sunflower, safflower and cottonseed oils; while you must increase the consumption of omega-3 fats such as those obtained from fishes such as salmon and tuna. Mono-saturated oils such as canola and extra virgin olive oil are known to possess specific anti-cancer properties. Healthy fats
(v) Abstain from alcoholism and smoking – Being addicted to alcohol or tobacco, especially if you are overweight is one of the surest ways to invite breast cancer. Just one drink of an alcohol a day can increase your chances of having breast cancer by 20 to 25%.
(vi) Be wary of estrogen boosting medicines – Be double skeptical of all drugs that contain estrogen in any form. This includes all the breast enlargement pills, which contain nothing but phyto-estrogens as their active ingredient. (vii) Regular exercise – It has been seen that breast cancer mostly affects women who lead a sedentary and less active lifestyle. Hence, it is necessary for women to maintain a minimum exercise routine per day. It helps if the exercises are chest expansion exercises.
(viii) Be cheerful – Though the effect between mental tensions and breast cancer is not yet proved, there is a strong indication that there may be an underlying factor. Thai Food to Lose Weight and Fight Cancer
